Why shoot Lucerne?
Lucerne sits where the Reuss leaves the lake, and the whole historic core fits into a bend of the river. The Kapellbrücke crosses it diagonally with its octagonal water tower, dating to 1333, and the Spreuerbrücke follows a few hundred meters downstream, both roofed in timber. On the north bank the old town squares carry painted facades, and above them nine towers of the Musegg wall run along the ridge. The Jesuit church puts two onion domes on the water, and the lake opens out to the east.
On a Lucerne photo tour with me, you'll shoot the Kapellbrücke and its water tower while the river is still flat and the bridge is empty, then work the painted facades on Weinmarkt and Hirschenplatz as the light comes over the roofs. The quieter frames are the Spreuerbrücke, where the timber is darker and the current faster, and the walk along the Musegg wall for the old town from above. Everything sits within a twenty-minute walk, so we stay on foot and take a local taxi only if we push out to the lakefront. Beginners leave with a sharper eye and confident use of aperture priority. Pros leave with compositions they wouldn't have found alone.
What you'll photograph
The frames you'll typically take home include covered timber bridges over moving water, painted facades on the old town squares, medieval towers and wall walks above the roofline, baroque church interiors, and the lake opening out beyond the river mouth. We adapt the route to the season and the subjects you like to shoot.
