Why shoot Hluboká nad Vltavou?

Hluboká nad Vltavou is a small town some 140 kilometres south of Prague, on the Vltava river just upstream from České Budějovice. It is dominated by Hluboká Castle, the Schwarzenbergs' 19th-century neo-Gothic redesign of an older Gothic and Renaissance fortress, modelled on Windsor and finished in dazzling white limestone. The castle sits on a low hill above the river, framed by an English landscaped park, mature oak avenues, and the broad meadows of the Vltava floodplain. Autumn fog around the walls and winter snow on the white facade change the mood completely from one season to the next.

On a Hluboká nad Vltavou photo tour with me, you'll catch the white facade through the oak alley at first light, work the curved approach to the gates and the inner courtyards through midday, and finish in the English park around the walls as golden hour rakes across the stone. We drive from Prague (~2 hours), then walk uphill from the village to the castle and around the surrounding park; the pace is gentle but steady. We shoot from the exterior, the courtyards, and the gardens. No castle interiors. Beginners leave with a sharper eye and confident use of aperture priority. Pros leave with compositions they wouldn't have found alone.
