Why shoot Ljubljana?

Ljubljana is a small capital built around a river, and one architect left his mark on most of it. Jože Plečnik reshaped the banks of the Ljubljanica through the 1930s, giving the city the Triple Bridge, the long colonnaded market along the water, and the National and University Library a few streets up. Downstream the Dragon Bridge carries four Art Nouveau dragons on its corners, cast in 1901. Behind the riverside the baroque old town squares climb toward a wooded hill with the castle on top, which means the whole center can be shot from inside and from above in one morning.

On a Ljubljana photo tour with me, you'll work the Triple Bridge and Prešeren Square while the river still holds a clean reflection and the square is empty, then follow the market colonnade along the water as the light drops into it. The quieter frames are the dragons on the Zmajski most, shot close for the ironwork, and the old town squares under the hill. Later we go up to the castle, either by funicular or on foot, for the town laid out against the ridgelines beyond it. Beginners leave with a sharper eye and confident use of aperture priority. Pros leave with compositions they wouldn't have found alone.

What you'll photograph

The frames you'll typically take home include river bridges and their reflections, early-modern architecture with a strong sense of line and repetition, baroque facades stacked under a castle hill, market arcades running along the water, and the whole old town seen from above. We adapt the route to the season and the subjects you like to shoot.
