Why shoot Karlštejn?
Karlštejn is Charles IV's 1348 Gothic fortress, perched on a forested hilltop in the Bohemian Karst about 30 kilometres southwest of Prague. The Great Tower with the Chapel of the Holy Cross, the Mariánská tower, and the Imperial Palace stack down the ridge above a small baroque village at the foot. The Berounka river valley opens out to the south, and the surrounding limestone forest changes the castle's mood in every season.
On a Karlštejn photo tour with me, you'll catch the castle from the village lanes at first light, walk up the cobbled approach to work the gates and the inner courtyards through midday, and climb to the upper terrace for the panoramic Berounka-valley view at golden hour. We drive from Prague (~45 minutes), then walk uphill from the village; the climb is gentle but steady. Beginners leave with a sharper eye and confident use of aperture priority. Pros leave with compositions they wouldn't have found alone.
What you'll photograph
The frames you'll typically take home include the medieval fortress crowning its hilltop at first light, the Berounka valley framed from the upper terrace at golden hour, autumn forest colours below the castle walls, and the baroque village lanes leading up to the gates. We adapt the route to the season and the subjects you like to shoot.
