Colorful historic buildings along the Inn River, Innsbruck, Austria

Innsbruck Photo Tour

The Golden Roof under snow-capped Nordkette peaks, Zaha Hadid's cable car stations above the city, and the colored houses mirrored in the Inn. Planned around the light, not the crowds.

Why shoot Innsbruck?

Innsbruck packs a full architectural range into a narrow Alpine valley. Late-Gothic arcades and the gilded oriel of the Golden Roof define the old town, baroque facades line Maria-Theresien-Straße, and Zaha Hadid's glacier-shaped funicular stations climb the slope above it. The Inn runs through the middle, with the colored houses of Mariahilf reflected in it on still mornings. Behind all of it the Nordkette rises past 2,300 meters, near enough that the peaks close off the end of almost every street.

On an Innsbruck photo tour with me, you'll work Maria-Theresien-Straße while the low sun still reaches the Annasäule and the snow line stacks up behind it, then cross to the far bank for the row of colored houses mirrored in the Inn. The quieter frames are the Stadtturm gallery above the old town roofs and the Hofkirche interior, where 28 bronze figures stand around Maximilian's cenotaph. We walk inside the historic core, take the Hungerburgbahn and the cable cars above it for the Nordkette viewpoints, and use a local taxi for anything else too far to walk. Beginners leave with a sharper eye and confident use of aperture priority. Pros leave with compositions they wouldn't have found alone.

What you'll photograph

The frames you'll typically take home include alpine backdrops behind old town rooflines, riverfront facades and their reflections at first light, late-Gothic and baroque detail under the arcades, contemporary architecture set against rock and snow, and church interiors where the light does the work. We adapt the route to the season and the subjects you like to shoot.
